The short answer: yes. Men have worn claddagh rings for as long as women have. The claddagh belongs to a family of rings exchanged between couples as a pledge, and the same traditions apply to everyone who wears it.
A ring for him as well as for her
The claddagh comes from a long line of “fede” rings, rings showing two clasped hands, which were given as engagement and wedding rings in medieval and Renaissance Europe. They were pledges between two people, worn by men and women alike. Today the claddagh is still widely used as a wedding band for both partners.
The claddagh has also been given to some well-known men. When John F. Kennedy visited Galway in 1963, he and his wife were given claddagh rings.
Which hand should a man wear a claddagh ring on?
The same four traditional positions apply to men and women:
- Right hand, point of the heart towards the fingertips: single.
- Right hand, point of the heart towards the wrist: in a relationship.
- Left ring finger, point of the heart towards the fingertips: engaged.
- Left ring finger, point of the heart towards the wrist: married.

Choosing a claddagh ring for a man
Band or classic shape?
Many men prefer a claddagh band: a wider ring with the hands, heart and crown set into a solid surround. It sits flat on the finger and feels sturdier than the open, classic shape.
Which metal?
Sterling silver gives the traditional look and can be resized by a jeweller. Tungsten is much harder and resists scratches, which suits men who work with their hands, but it cannot be resized.
Celtic details
Knotwork around the band gives a stronger Irish character and pairs well with a plain claddagh centre.
Getting the size right
Wide bands sit more tightly than thin rings, so if you are between two sizes, choose the larger. If the ring is a surprise, measure one of his existing rings with our UK ring size guide.
FAQs
Is a claddagh ring feminine?
No. Its meaning, friendship, love and loyalty, is not tied to gender, and men’s bands are among the most popular claddagh styles.
Can a man buy his own claddagh ring?
Yes. Folklore says a claddagh brings more luck as a gift, but many men buy their own, often as a link to Irish roots.
